If a series of words is entered a standard search is performed. This searches for all occurrences of any of the search words. For most searches this should return the most relevant results, for example if you put in “Abraham David” you would get all occurrences of Abraham and all occurrences of David.
This method of searching involves adding an extra character to help refine the search criteria, the basic ones are:
+ This sign indicates that this word must be present in each row that is returned – for example “+Abraham +David” means that both “Abraham” and “David” have to be in each of the results from the search. The “+” must go at the front of the search word with no space.
- This sign indicates that this word must not be present in any of the rows that are returned. This would usually be used together with other search words – for example “Abraham -David” refines the search to give results where only Abraham appears in the text and there is no associated mention of David. The “-” should go at the front of the search word with no space.
* This symbol allows you to search on words or part words and should be added to the end of the search word – for example “Abra*” would bring back all results for both Abraham and also Abram. The “*” must go at the end of the search word/part word with no space.
" Using double quotes or inverted commas finds results that exactly match the words inside them. For example "Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" would find only places where that text appears exactly as shown including any punctuation – in this case the comma after Abraham.
